FAQ - Beeswax candles

Q: What is a good gift for a dog lover?

A: Scotty Dog beeswax candle is a lovely present for a dog lover. Scotty dog has all the character of a Scottish terrier. He comes in a cardboard gift box with a ceramic dish. The beeswax has a gorgeous scent. Light your candle on a ceramic dish to catch the wax as it melts. It will be a joyful present for a dog lover to open.

Q: How is a beeswax candle made?

A: The beeswax is collected from the apiary so that the apiarist can prepare the beeswax for sale. I have 2 batches of beeswax:

Bee Happy Apiaries, Toodyay, Western Australia and

Bee Chillin, Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Raw beeswax contains debris left from the hive so it must be melted and strained before it can be transformed into a candle.

The mould is cast from silicone and left to harden. It took a few goes before I got this mould to be just the way I wanted. It’s perfect now and ready for Scotty Dog.

It’s time to make a beeswax candle. Wicks are prepared and threaded through the mould before pouring the melted wax. Scotty Dog is cooled down and removed from the mould. So cute!

Q: Are beeswax candles good for you?

A: Yes, beeswax is a natural product of bees. Beeswax is produced by worker bees who shape it in the hive to store food and protect the queen. The beekeeper with remove honeycomb frames to harvest honey. The wax cap is removed and honey is spun out resulting in the first stage of honey and wax. It will still need to be cleaned before we can use the wax and eat the honey.

Beeswax has been used in food production for ages and is the least likely to cause irritation to skin. Beeswax similarly is an expensive form of wax and superior to paraffin (petrochemical) wax. Beeswax is a natural and renewable resource so It's a better choice than petrolatum products.

Beeswax is biodegradable (breaks down naturally in the environment) making it a safe and preferable product to use. As well, bees make a valuable contribution to the growing of crops for the food that we eat.
