Thoughtfully made ceramics

The creation of ceramics is a quiet blend of artistry and technical skill. Susan Fahd creates the ceramic pieces you will find at Busy Bee Blossom, shaping each one by hand so that no two are ever exactly alike.

Each piece begins with carefully selected clay, gently formed using hand-building techniques. The clay is then left to dry naturally before undergoing its first firing in a kiln — known as the bisque firing. This stage strengthens the clay and prepares it to receive glaze. The pieces are fired at around 1000°C at Clay Cartel, Marrickville.

Once cooled, each piece is glazed by hand. The glaze adds subtle colour and texture, while creating a smooth, glass-like surface that is both waterproof and easy to clean.

A second kiln firing, known as the glaze firing, completes the process. This final stage vitrifies the glaze, resulting in a durable, refined finish.
